Electrical Panel Upgrades in Cedar Park & Central Texas

More capacity. Modern protection. Zero guesswork.

A panel upgrade replaces your breaker box (or old fuse box) with a modern load center, usually 200 amps, so your home can safely run today's loads like EV chargers, heat pumps and induction ranges. In Central Texas a 200A panel replacement typically runs $2,800–$5,500 including the permit and inspection, and most are completed in one day.

Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's power system. When it's undersized, overloaded or simply worn out, you get tripping breakers, warm covers, flickering lights and, in the worst cases, a fire risk hiding behind a metal door.

Cedar Park Electric has been replacing panels across Williamson and Travis counties since 1996. We size the new panel with a real load calculation, pull the city permit, coordinate the disconnect with your utility, and leave you with a clean, labeled panel that passes inspection the first time.

Signs you need panel upgrades

  • Breakers trip often, or you're out of spaces for new circuits
  • You have a Federal Pacific Stab-Lok, Zinsco or Challenger panel
  • There's still a fuse box, or 60–100A service on a growing household
  • The panel feels warm, buzzes, smells hot or shows rust or scorching
  • You're adding an EV charger, hot tub, shop, pool or addition
  • An inspector or insurance company flagged the panel

What's included

  • Load calculation per NEC Article 220 to size the panel correctly
  • New 200A (or 400A / 320A) load center from a major manufacturer
  • New breakers with AFCI / GFCI protection where the code calls for it
  • Grounding and bonding brought up to current code
  • Permit, utility coordination and inspection handled for you
  • Fully labeled panel directory and a walk-through when we're done

What affects the price

Most panel upgrades projects in Central Texas land between $2,800–$5,500. Where yours falls depends on:

  • Panel location and clearance
  • Whether the meter base or service entrance also needs replacing
  • AFCI/GFCI breaker count required by code
  • Upgrading to 400A (320A) service
  • Utility and city permit requirements

Panel Upgrades FAQ

How do I know if I need a panel upgrade or just a repair?

If your panel is a recalled-era brand (Federal Pacific, Zinsco), shows heat damage, is out of breaker spaces, or your load calculation exceeds about 80% of its rating, it's time to replace it. A single bad breaker or loose connection can often be repaired. We'll tell you which one you actually need.

How long does a panel upgrade take?

Most residential panel replacements take one working day. Power is off for roughly 4–8 hours while we swap the panel. Service upgrades that need a new meter base or utility reconnect can take a little longer, depending on the utility's schedule.

Do I need a permit to replace an electrical panel in Cedar Park?

Yes. Panel replacements and service upgrades require an electrical permit and inspection in Cedar Park, Leander, Round Rock, Austin and the surrounding cities. We pull the permit and meet the inspector, and the cost is built into your quote.

Should I upgrade to 200 amps or 400 amps?

200 amps covers most homes, even with one EV charger. Large homes with two EVs, electric heat, a pool, a hot tub or a shop often need 320A/400A service. Our load calculation tells you which, so you don't pay for capacity you won't use.

Are Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels really dangerous?

Independent testing found Federal Pacific Stab-Lok breakers can fail to trip under overload, and Zinsco breakers can fuse to the bus bar. Many Central Texas home inspectors and insurers flag them. Replacing them is one of the most common safety upgrades we do.
