Lightning Protection, Surge Arresters & Grounding
The Hill Country gets hit. Your home doesn't have to get fried.
Lightning protection for a home combines three layers: a solid grounding electrode system, surge arresters at the service entrance, and (for exposed structures) a strike-termination system that routes a direct hit safely to earth. Grounding and arrester upgrades in Central Texas usually run $450–$2,500 depending on the property.
Williamson and Travis counties see frequent lightning, especially on Hill Country ridgelines and around Lake Travis. Most lightning damage comes through the wiring, not a direct hit, which is why grounding and surge arresters are the first line of defense.
We inspect your existing grounding and bonding, install surge arresters at the meter and panel, and help you decide whether a full strike-protection system makes sense for your home, barn, shop or business.
Signs you need lightning protection
- Your home sits on a ridge, hilltop or open acreage
- You've had storm damage to electronics, well pumps or gates
- Your ground rod is missing, corroded or never inspected
- You have outbuildings, a pool or a well pump on long runs
What's included
- Grounding electrode and bonding inspection
- Ground rod / electrode upgrades to current code
- Service-entrance surge arresters (Type 1) and panel SPDs (Type 2)
- Protection for detached buildings, wells, gates and pool equipment
- Written plan for full strike-termination systems when warranted
What affects the price
Most lightning protection projects in Central Texas land between $450–$2,500. Where yours falls depends on:
- Number of structures and services
- Soil and grounding electrode condition
- Detached buildings and well pumps

Lightning Protection FAQ
What's the difference between lightning protection and surge protection?
Surge protection handles voltage spikes that come in on the wiring. Lightning protection (air terminals, down conductors and grounding) handles a direct strike to the structure. Most homes need strong surge protection and grounding; exposed homes and outbuildings may also benefit from a strike-termination system.
How do I know if my home's grounding is adequate?
Older homes often have a single corroded rod or rely on metal water pipes that have since been replaced with plastic. We test and inspect the grounding electrode system and bring it up to current code as part of any lightning protection assessment.
