About this calculator

How do electricians calculate the load on a panel?

Electricians use NEC Article 220. For existing homes the 'optional method' (220.82/220.83) counts 3 VA per square foot plus kitchen and laundry circuits and fixed appliances, takes the first 10 kVA at 100% and the rest at 40%, then adds the larger of heating or cooling. The result in watts divided by 240 volts gives amps.

Is 200 amps enough for a house with an EV?

For most homes, yes. A typical 2,500 sq ft Central Texas home with gas or heat-pump heat and one Level 2 charger usually calculates well under 200A. Two EVs, electric resistance heat, a pool and a hot tub together can push past it.
